For a first trip to Croatia, shortlist Split for city time and island connections, Dubrovnik for a stay centred on the Old Town, or Rovinj for a coastal town with an Istrian hinterland. Choose Hvar or Korčula when the island stay itself is the priority. For a week, start with one or two bases and make the arrival journey part of the decision.
Pick the base that fits your first trip

Treat this as a way to narrow the map. Your flight times, available rooms and essential facilities should decide the final shortlist.
1. Dubrovnik: a historic city by the sea
Consider Dubrovnik if the Old Town is a priority. Hotel Excelsior is one coastal option outside the walls. Check walking routes, steps and the exact view in the room category you choose.
2. Split: city time and onward island travel
Split suits a plan combining the old city with island connections. Cornaro is useful to compare for a central stay. Resort hotels farther from the centre need a different plan for evenings out.
3. Hvar: choose between the town and the wider island
Hvar is not a single resort area. Adriana suits a Hvar Town search, while Maslina Resort places you near Stari Grad. Confirm the arrival port before arranging a transfer.
4. Korčula: match your base to the part of the island
Compare Korčula Town for its historic centre, Lumbarda for a different village setting, or the island's western and southern areas for a stay farther from town. Aminess Lume is in Brna; Hotel Korkyra is in Vela Luka. Neither is a Korčula Old Town hotel.
5. Istria: Rovinj or the countryside
Choose Rovinj and Istria for a coastal-town and countryside combination. Compare Grand Park with Meneghetti near Bale. 6. Zadar: Old Town, Borik or Punta Skala
Hotel Bastion suits an Old Town search. Falkensteiner Adriana is in Borik, while Iadera is at Punta Skala outside the city. Pick the address that fits how often you want to visit town.
7. Zagreb: an inland city break
Zagreb can be a destination in its own right or part of a longer trip. Compare Esplanade and Hotel Dubrovnik for different central positions. It is not a coastal base.
Where should first-time visitors stay without a car?
Start by testing a normal day: can you reach breakfast, the place you want to explore, dinner and your room without arranging a journey each time? A central Split or Dubrovnik hotel may fit that routine. A Rovinj stay can also be centred on the hotel, town and nearby coast, with an arrival transfer arranged separately.
An island is still possible without renting a car, but the port and the hotel may be in different places. Obtain an onward transfer plan before paying for the room. If countryside excursions are a major part of the holiday, compare a driver or selected rental days instead of assuming you need a vehicle every day.
A first week: choose one of these shapes
- One base for six nights: useful for families, pool time and a slower first visit. Add one or two outings instead of changing hotels. See the family week itinerary.
- Two bases over six nights: divide the stay only after confirming the connection and how much of a day it takes. Reserve the final night according to the departure journey.
- A longer regional trip: use extra nights to explore the area properly. Istria and southern Dalmatia should not be treated as neighbouring hotel districts.
Seven days and six nights leaves less usable sightseeing time than seven full days between arrival and departure. Write out the actual nights before deciding that another base will fit.
What if swimming is the priority?
Choose the swimming area before the room view. A platform with a ladder, a pebble cove and a sandy city beach meet different needs. Our hotel beach-access guide explains the questions to ask. A destination choice alone cannot guarantee a gradual entry, exclusive beach use or suitable water conditions.
Make the shortlist manageable
Choose your likely flights, count hotel nights and check transfers before adding another destination. Compare actual room quotes rather than assuming a region has a fixed discount. If beach access, a king bed or connected rooms is essential, make that requirement explicit.
