Choose Split when the city and nearby island connections are central to your plans. Choose Dubrovnik when the walled Old Town and a southern coastal stay are the main attraction. Neither is automatically the cheaper or quieter choice; your hotel address and dates do much of that work.
Choose Split for a city-and-islands plan
A central hotel makes it easier to combine the old city with the waterfront. Cornaro is a candidate for a city stay; Hotel Park offers another setting near Bačvice.
If pools, beach time and resort facilities matter more, compare Radisson Blu. Le Méridien Lav is in Podstrana, outside Split, so allow for road transfers when planning evenings in town.
Split's port can be useful for island travel, but check the route and departure for your date. A map showing a nearby island does not establish a convenient day trip with time ashore.
Choose Dubrovnik for the Old Town and coastal hotels
Stay outside the walls if you want to compare larger coastal hotels with pools and sea access. Excelsior, Bellevue and Rixos Premium occupy different positions around the city; they do not have identical walks or views.
Give the Old Town time early or late in the day if that suits your plans, while recognising that crowd levels depend on events and visitor traffic. A room beyond the centre can provide a different atmosphere without guaranteeing silence.
Day trips: count travel time honestly
For either base, choose one main excursion per day. Include the trip from hotel to departure point, waiting, the journey and the return. Do not treat Zadar, Plitvice or another distant destination as a short outing simply because it appears on a tour menu.
Road journeys and airport transfers vary with traffic. Sea trips vary by operator, season and weather. Keep the day before a flight simple if your itinerary depends on boats.
Costs and a two-centre stay
Compare live room rates on equivalent terms, then include taxis, ferries and excursions. We do not apply a fixed price difference between the cities.
With a longer stay, splitting nights between both can make sense. With only a few nights, the transfer may use time you would rather spend at the hotel. See our seven-day route for one example of how to count the nights.
