Choosing between Dubrovnik and Hvar for your honeymoon is one of the nicest problems a couple can have. Both deliver the Adriatic at its most seductive — but they do it in very different ways. Dubrovnik is grand, cinematic and steeped in history; Hvar is barefoot-luxury, lavender-scented and unhurried.

The Setting: Drama vs Escape
Dubrovnik feels like stepping onto a film set. Marble streets polished by centuries, city walls rising straight from the sea, and sunsets over the old harbour that make even jaded travelers reach for their cameras. If your idea of romance is candlelit dinners against a backdrop of Renaissance stone, Dubrovnik is unmatched in Croatia — and several five-stars offer private beach access steps from the walls.
Hvar is about slowing down. Croatia's sunniest island mixes a glamorous harbour town with pine-fringed coves, lavender fields and vineyards. The Hotels
Both destinations have genuinely world-class properties, but the styles differ.
In Dubrovnik, the standouts sit right on the water with Old Town views. Villa Dubrovnik is the classic honeymoon choice — adults-oriented, carved into a cliffside, with a private beach and a boat shuttle to the Old Town. Hotel Excelsior offers five-star grandeur a short stroll from the walls, with one of the best sea-view spas in the city.
On Hvar, the mood is more intimate. Maslina Resort near Stari Grad is arguably Croatia's finest boutique resort — mindful luxury, olive groves, and a spa that draws on the island's herbs. In Hvar Town, Palace Elisabeth brings Habsburg-era heritage to the main square, while Adriana Spa Hotel has a rooftop pool overlooking the harbour that was made for sunset cocktails.
Verdict: Dubrovnik wins on grand, iconic hotels; Hvar wins on intimate, boutique romance.
Privacy & Crowds
This is where the two diverge most. Dubrovnik is one of Europe's most visited cities, and in July and August the Old Town gets genuinely crowded between 10am and 6pm, especially on cruise-ship days. Luxury hotels solve much of this — most sit outside the walls with private beaches — but you'll share the famous sights.
Hvar Town has its own summer buzz (it's a nightlife destination for the yacht crowd), yet privacy is always a short drive or boat ride away: the Pakleni Islands, hidden coves near Zavala, quiet konobas above Stari Grad. If seclusion is your priority, Hvar takes it comfortably.
Food & Wine
Dubrovnik offers Croatia's most polished fine-dining scene, including Michelin-starred dining inside the city walls and superb oysters from nearby Ston. Hvar counters with something arguably more romantic: family-run konobas in stone hamlets, peka lamb ordered hours in advance, and local wines — Plavac Mali from steep southern slopes — tasted at the vineyard itself. Beaches & the Sea
Neither destination is about long sandy beaches — this is the Adriatic, where the currency is crystal-clear water over pebbles and rock. Dubrovnik's luxury hotels compensate with excellent private beach platforms and infinity pools — Hotel Bellevue is a standout for its sheltered sandy cove.
Hvar simply has more: dozens of coves, the Pakleni archipelago ten minutes away by taxi boat, and water so clear it looks Photoshopped. Hotel Podstine pairs a private pebble beach with a quieter base outside Hvar Town's harbour energy. For swimmers and boat-day lovers, Hvar wins.
Logistics
Dubrovnik is easier: a major international airport 25 minutes from the Old Town, with direct summer flights from across Europe and the US. Hvar requires a flight to Split plus a one-hour catamaran — not difficult, but one more step. If you're maximizing a short honeymoon (4–5 nights), Dubrovnik's simplicity matters. With a week or more, Hvar's extra journey becomes part of the romance.
Price
Both are Croatia's most expensive destinations, and in peak season, top suites in either can rival the French Riviera. Broadly: Dubrovnik's five-star rates run 10–20% higher than Hvar's, but Hvar Town restaurants and beach clubs can be pricier day-to-day. Budget €600–900 per night for a top-tier double in high season in either destination; visit in June or September and rates drop meaningfully while the weather stays glorious.
Our Verdict
- Choose Dubrovnik if: it's your first time in Croatia, you have 4–5 nights, you want iconic views, grand hotels and fine dining, and you don't mind sharing the scenery.
- Choose Hvar if: you want privacy, boutique hotels, swimming and slow mornings — a honeymoon that feels like an escape rather than a tour.
