Croatia works well for a honeymoon if you want more than a single beach resort: a walled city at sunset, an island harbour, a long lunch in wine country and a hotel room you are happy to come back to. The trick is choosing two bases at most for a week, giving each one at least three nights and booking the room type, not just the hotel.
Is Croatia a good honeymoon destination?
Yes, for couples who like a mix of towns, sea and food. Most honeymoons here combine one historic town with one quieter place by the water. You can swim from rocks, pebble coves and hotel platforms, eat outdoors most evenings from late spring to early autumn, and move between places by short drives or catamarans.
It is less suited to couples who want a long sandy beach outside the door every day, or who want to change hotels every night. Croatia rewards slower trips. If that sounds right, the next decision is where to base yourselves.
The best places in Croatia for a honeymoon
| Base | Best for | Hotels to compare | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dubrovnik | Old Town evenings and sea views | Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik, Villa Dubrovnik, Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik | The walking route to the Old Town and summer crowds inside the walls |
| Hvar Town | Harbour dinners and a lively evening if you want it | Adriana, Hvar Spa Hotel, Palace Elisabeth | Room location and evening noise in July and August |
| Quieter Hvar | Swimming and slow days | Maslina Resort, Hotel Podstine | How you get to Hvar Town for dinner |
| Korčula | A smaller old town and a calmer pace | Aminess Lume Hotel | Lume is in Brna on the south coast, a drive from Korčula Town |
| Rovinj | A romantic old town, design hotels and food | Monte Mulini, Grand Park Hotel Rovinj, Hotel Lone | Sea access is mostly rocks, pebbles and platforms |
| Istrian countryside | Wine, olive oil and long lunches | Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery | You will want a car or arranged transfers |
Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is the classic choice and it earns its place. The views from a sea-facing room outside the walls, an evening walk on the Stradun after the day visitors leave and a boat to Lokrum make a strong first chapter. Stay outside the Old Town for a quieter room and walk or take a short taxi in for dinner. Our Dubrovnik honeymoon hotel shortlist compares the options room by room.
Hvar
Hvar suits couples who want an island without giving up good restaurants. Hvar Town is busy and social in high summer, so pick the room location carefully. The Stari Grad side of the island is calmer. If you are choosing between the two classics, read Dubrovnik vs Hvar for a honeymoon and our guide to where to stay in Hvar.
Korčula
Korčula is the quieter alternative to Hvar: a compact walled old town, vineyards and fewer crowds. It works best as the second half of a trip from Dubrovnik. See where to stay in Korčula before choosing between the town and a seaside hotel.
Rovinj and Istria
Rovinj is the most romantic town in the north: a hill of pastel houses, sunset over the old town and a strong food scene. Monte Mulini is adults-only, which many honeymooners prefer. Pair Rovinj with a few nights on a wine estate inland for a completely different rhythm. Our guide to where to stay in Rovinj covers the areas in detail.
When to go
May, June and September are the sweet spot for most honeymoons. Days are warm, restaurants are fully open and the busiest weeks are behind or ahead of you. The sea is usually warmer in September than in May, so if swimming every day matters, lean towards late June or September.
July and August bring the most heat, the highest room rates and the busiest old towns. They still work if you choose quieter hotels and plan sightseeing early or late in the day. October can be lovely and calm, but some seasonal routes and services wind down, so check timetables for your exact dates. For month-by-month detail, see Croatia in June and Croatia in September.
How many nights do you need?
Give each base at least three nights. Moving between the coast and an island usually takes most of a day once you add check-out, the transfer to the port, the crossing and check-in. With seven nights, two bases is the comfortable maximum. With ten nights, three bases works if one of them is short and close to your departure airport.
Three honeymoon routes
Classic: Dubrovnik and Hvar, 7 nights
- Nights 1 to 3: Dubrovnik. Old Town, the walls early in the morning, a boat to Lokrum.
- Nights 4 to 7: Hvar. Beach days, a boat trip to the Pakleni islands, dinners in Hvar Town.
- Getting there: fly into Dubrovnik, take a seasonal catamaran to Hvar, then a catamaran to Split for your flight home. Check Jadrolinija and Krilo timetables for your dates.
Quiet: Rovinj and an Istrian wine estate, 7 nights
- Nights 1 to 4: Rovinj. Old town walks, swimming in Lone Bay, dinners by the harbour.
- Nights 5 to 7: a wine estate inland. Tastings, truffle season if you travel in autumn, hilltop towns such as Motovun and Grožnjan.
- Getting there: Pula airport is the closest. Compare it with Trieste or Venice, which usually mean a longer transfer. A car makes the countryside part much easier.
Long: Dubrovnik, Korčula and Hvar, 10 nights
- Nights 1 to 3: Dubrovnik.
- Nights 4 to 6: Korčula, with a day on the Pelješac peninsula for wine and oysters in Ston.
- Nights 7 to 9: Hvar.
- Night 10: Split, so you are close to the airport and not relying on a morning crossing on departure day.

Choosing the room, not just the hotel
On a honeymoon, the room matters more than the hotel's star rating. Ask for these in writing before you pay:
- The bed type. A king or a double, not two singles pushed together.
- The exact view wording. Sea view, partial sea view and Old Town view are different rooms.
- Whether the balcony or terrace is private and has seating for two.
- Any honeymoon extras. Mention the occasion when you book, but do not count on an upgrade, champagne or late check-out unless the hotel confirms it.
For a sense of overall cost, our guide to whether Croatia is expensive builds a seven-night budget from real room quotes rather than averages.
